Introduction
Well, from my point of view open-source should always be the only way, for everything. The reasons are not only technical, but ethical and environmental.
I may send some time explaining the ethical and environmental parts here someday if they are not obvious, but let's start with the technical ones.
A note on what "Open source" means here
Well, this should be obvious too, but I often get feedback showing me that it's not, and even people accustomed to these concepts often disagree on the exact definition.
Open source means that you have access to the sources.
It does not mean "free" (not even as in "freedom"). It does not mean that everything is released to the public domain for anyone to do anything with it.
Open-source simply means that you can read the source code, the schematics, the plans, and know how "it" is built, and fix "it" if necessary. It means that you "own" what you bought.
You do not get the right to reproduce or sell copies (which is what you get with "logiciel libre" (free software, but with "free" as in "freedom", not necessarily free beer) or equivalent open-source hardware licences). You can read more on this here (wikipedia : Free software movement), here (wikipedia : Open Source), or here (FSF website)
